Introduction
Helsa is an innovative online therapy platform designed specifically for the LGBTQ+ community in the UK. The app connects users with specialised LGBTQ+ psychologists who understand this community's unique challenges and experiences.
Problem
Our extensive research revealed a significant gap in mental health services for LGBTQ+ individuals. Existing resources, like the NHS and LGBTQ+ charities, often struggle to meet the growing demand for tailored support.
Outcome
Recognising this need, Helsa was born. As a UI Designer, I collaborated with a small team to develop a mobile app prototype that offers accessible, LGBTQ+-focused support and information.
This app addresses the community's mental health issues in a safe and inclusive environment.
Our efforts paid off! The team secured funding from a venture capital-backed startup accelerator thanks to our high-fidelity prototype, which was deemed a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) by the program.
This experience gave me valuable insights into the process of delivering a successful prototype for user testing.
Crew
As part of a compact team with a Project Manager and Product Owner, I played a vital role as a UI Designer in translating research findings into a user-friendly, clickable prototype.
Challenges
Time constraints were a significant hurdle. The Product Owner had a tight deadline for delivering a business plan with an MVP prototype for the venture program.
Persona

Pat
Zack, Moved to London 5 years ago for a digital marketing career and a more diverse community. Professionally successful but hesitant to open up about his sexuality to colleagues. Struggles to find close friends in London's somewhat distant culture. Seeking more happiness, worries about his social life and future relationships.
Goals
Zack is a social but self-conscious young professional seeking deeper connections, both personally and professionally, while embracing self-acceptance and striving for career advancement.
Frustrations
Zack is financially squeezed yearning for authentic friendships but constantly thwarted by city flakiness and the struggle to build meaningful connections beyond the surface.
Process
To meet this challenge, we:
Defined the core problem: We collaboratively identified the specific needs of the LGBTQ+ community and how Helsa could address them.
Developed brand guidelines: We created a comprehensive visual guide, including a calming green colour scheme, a San Francisco Compact Rounded font for readability, and a logo representing inclusivity and well-being.
Insights
The client was impressed with the deliverables and secured their place in the program. We then conducted user testing with 262 participants aged 25-45. Three key insights emerged:
High demand for video therapy: 21% preferred video therapy, highlighting the importance of interactive elements in connecting with therapists.
Complementary features: Tool Kits and chatbot support were crucial for ongoing support between therapy sessions.
Pre-diagnosis questionnaire: Participants desired a questionnaire to determine the type of support needed and facilitate better therapist matching.

Prototypes
Given creative freedom, I focused on clean, minimal layouts that cater to users' busy schedules. Avatars were introduced for personalised experiences, and an onboarding process guides users to relevant "Tool Kits" for managing their concerns.
The high-fidelity version focused on essential features like Tool Kits, Profiles, Resources, Calendar, and Mood Tracker, presenting a compelling MVP for the startup program.
